Issue 3 out now!

As one of the most successful models of her generation, Arizona Muse now adds sustainable fashion designer to her resume.

Interview by Erica Commisso.

An introduction… I am a model, a mother, a wife, a passionate advocate for social sustainability and environmental regeneration.

What’s the current project you’re working on?

I’m working on three things. I’m building a brand of  sustainable occasionwear  with my business parter Georgina MacIntyre, I’m  making a documentary with my brother, Theo Muse to showcase my fashion manufacturers who are getting it right in a sustainable way. I’m also working on building a baby (I’m pregnant!)

What achievement are you most proud of? And the biggest hurdle you have overcome?

I’m most proud of being a single mother to my first born and now a wife. I spend a lot of time and energy on these two parts of my life and I cherish them.  The biggest hurdle I’ve overcome is being a single mother, my heart goes out to single parents.

Issue (something going on in the world) that is most important to you right now:

I’m interested in and concerned by agricultural practices. This goes beyond what we eat. Most of what we wear is grown on a farm. Cotton is one of the most destructive crops when not grown on an organic farm. It’s unhealthy for the environment and for the families who toil away to produce the harvest.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given:

Be kind. Whatever else you are, be kind as well.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever given:

Don’t eat genetically modified foods. This answer makes me laugh because it sounds ludicrous. But I strongly believe that in 50 years we will look back and think “what did we do to ourselves and our planet.”

How is your work making a difference? How do you plan to promote sustainable fashion in the future?

I plan to always promote sustainable fashion. My first step is this fashion brand I’m starting, to make glamourous birthday-girl type dresses for sparkly women. All the materials I use will be of an extremely high environmental standard.

Who is an eco warrior in your life who inspires you?

Nina Marenzi, Livia Firth, Stella McCartney, Orsola De Castro, Jessica Sweiden and Ellen MacArthur.

Are there any fashion designers or influencers who are promoting sustainability that inspire you?

Kit Willow of Kit X, Fonesbreck, Ayiyu, Carefull, Community Clothing, The Ecoiste and Emma Watson.

What trends are you inspired by or interested in?

I’m particularly drawn to unusual colors. I love variations on mustard yellow or a deep brick red.

You said you are starting a fashion brand, what fabrics do you use?

We are using a wide range of materials. This is occasionwear so it needs to feel luxurious and look exceptional. We are using GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified linen, biodynamic silk, recycled plastic sequins and Tencel luxe to name a few. The list of our suppliers keeps growing as we find new and exciting fibers from people who care.

How are you an eco warrior?

As far as I’m aware, I’m the first model to start a business that provides occasion wear from earth friendly materials. Hopefully people like them.

My mission is… to do as much as I can to find solutions to the problems our global society faces. This work enthuses me more than anything I’ve ever done. The time for awareness building is over and the time for action is here.
